Life In The Pacific Northwest
Though the weather’s been lovely, our region’s news has been bleak.
I hope all of you have been safe and healthy during the pandemic, and continue to be so.
I had a powerful realization today. While training some junior belts, I noticed one, a high-school aged young woman, was watching me closely. Everything I said and did was watched closely. I saw how much potential I had to build her up, or tear her down.
It’s sobering and humbling. Knowing how nuch influence I have. I love the idea that a few well placed positives: words, smiles, can add so much to her life. And screwing this up can really mess things up.
Long ago, I pledged to be powerfully positive. Seeking, still, to master that. But I’m moving forward.
You ever had such an epiphany?
Peter Dinklage, currently famous for his role as Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones spoke at Bennington College’s commencement in 2012. Here’s a nice highlight reel.
The basic theme: Don’t Wait. Don’t wait to pursue your dreams, to take risks, to be fully alive. I also appreciate his incorporation of Beckett: “Ever tried, ever failed. No matter, try again. Fail again, fail better.”
Now, this advice scares the crop out of me. But i know it’s true. Greatness is never achieved without facing fears, without taking risks, without facing failure. The only real failure in life is giving up, or it’s mirror image: never starting. So, don’t wait.

I seek a voice of positivity. With that, I want those around me to feel confidence. Not a mindless confidence that misses real limits and sets up for failure. Nor the sociopathic version, which doesn’t care about the impacts on the world or communities which surround us. Rather, a feeling of ability; knowing, deeply, we can make a positive impact. This mindset builds upon love.
This voice presents challenges, especially in today’s culture. The world highly focuses on our divisions, ignoring our commonalities. Speaking with a positive voice, elaborating upon our potentials as a diverse people generates derision. That saddens me. We value love, and denigrate it. This disconnect causes us much pain. And me a great deal of frustration.
Fret not, though, if you share this vision: I shall continue. Continuing with a vision of different people, with different backgrounds working together. Elements of Doctor King’s Dream. For I have the same dream. And the more I learn and grow, the deeper it becomes. Built upon this vision of love, my central feeling: hope. Hope for a positive future; people working together. And I delight in this.
