I’ve long been a customer of Edmonds Bookshop. I just read in the Seattle Times that Mary Kay and David Brewster are retiring. As sad as I’ll be to see Mary Kay move along, I’m pleased that long-time assistant manager Michelle Bear will step up and lead.

Their post led to a discussion about great burger places in the region. Funny, but I realize I’ve experienced many and have my “definitive” list of favorites, which stretch from Seattle north to Bellingham.
This my reflexive list. What’s missing? What are your favorites? I’d really love to hear them.
Several years ago, I considered doing a road trip focused on the best burger places. Might be time to consider that one again. What do you think?
On my drive into the office today, I passed the strip mall on the north side of 196th (just east of 40th) and was pretty certain that I saw an Ezell’s Chicken sign. A few years ago, they closed their first Lynnwood store (on 76th & 196th; Ezell’s was still showing on this Google map street view [as of today, at least]). It looks like the store wasn’t performing, so they moved it to south Everett, which is now apparently closed (their website has one in Mill Creek). I started with their chicken years ago, and am fond of seeing local businesses do well. And how much better does one get than getting called out by Oprah as “the best”?
There is the possibility I read that wrong, but I’m pretty sure I saw the logo on the banner. It’s an interesting location, as it’s right across 40th from KFC, which has been in that location as long as I can remember. Perhaps that will help? Will it hurt? That area gets massive amounts of vehicle traffic, so that should help things.
Anyway, if I’m right, I wish them the greatest success.
I wrote a brief post a couple of weeks ago looking at a local company, Zumiez, and some of their videos (you can read that here). The Everett Herald posted a story on Monday looking at one of the Co-Founders, Gary Haakenson.
My son is big fan of Zumiez fashion, so I’m closely attached to the brand. I’ve been quite impressed with my interactions with them, both in their stores and in the community. Their headquarters is just a few miles from my house, and I regularly drive past. All these bring about an attachment.
So, read up on one of my local brands and enjoy this snapshot into regional business culture. And into one of our areas entrepreneurs.
