Fun News From the #ArlingtonFlyIn

Arlington Fly-In Logo

My good friends, Jack & Francine over at Whiskey Ridge Brewery in Arlington will be providing beer for the beer-garden at this Year’s Fly-In. This is exciting news for them! (Full disclosure: I built their website and help with their social media.)

In case you didn’t know, the Arlington Fly-In is a big deal for recreation aviation enthusiasts. This began as a one day fly-in and spaghetti feed WAAY back in 1969. It’s quite a hoot and one of the more unique Northwest events. This year it’s July 9-11.

Driving to Port Angeles today

Later today we’re zipping of to Port Angeles for the North Olympic Discovery Marathon’s Kid’s Marathon. My son’s been training with his school’s running club. They’ve run a total of twenty-five miles before today. This afternoon, they’ll run the final 1.2 miles to complete the official marathon distance.

I love Port Angeles! It’s a gorgeous drive to get there; a fun way to spend time with family and friends. A ferry ride will be a delight. It’s been some time, and with the summer-esque weather, it’ll be a particularly delightful trip.

The Victorian downtown enchants me. Plus, the waterfront simply bubbles with charm. It’s not often I’m able to drop to a slower place. Love that, even if it’s just an afternoon.

Grinduro: A New Kind Of Bike Race?

This looks like a freaking awesome party down in the Sierra Nevadas. But October is a hard time for me to get away, what with everyone else in school and all. Heck, maybe it will be a great time for ME to break away. Sigh, probably not.

GRINDURO
On October 10, the world will be introduced to Grinduro, a new format of bike racing that combines the best elements of a mountain bike enduro and a gravel grinder road race. The Grinduro is one long loop of pavement, dirt and singletrack, where finishing times aren’t based on overall loop time. Instead, you’ll be timed only on four segments that were designed to reward the most well rounded of rouleurs.

The course is a serious affair (8,000-feet of climbing in 60 miles of our favorite roads in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains), but the Grinduro isn’t meant to be a sufferfest. You’ll ride with friends, enjoy the rest stops, take in the views, and then give it all you’ve got during the timed segments.

Once you’re done riding, the real party gets started. Grinduro is not just a bike race. It’s a celebration of cycling with as much emphasis on the party as the ride, with excellent food, an impressive display of art and incredible handmade bikes, live music, free camping and a festival atmosphere.

Grinduro is a new kind of bike race, and you won’t want to miss this party.

We went to this last year and really enjoyed it. Not sure our schedule allows us to this weekend, but if we can, we will go. Hope to see you there.

Celebration of Food

Taste, explore and experience real food Sunday, May 17th. The Celebration of Food Festival, Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 11:00 AM4:00 PM at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW, Lynnwood.

The festival is a free family event that innovatively highlights sustainable, local, organic and wholesome (SLOW) food. “In our fourth year, we are still running a very unique event. We bring people together from Snohomish County and beyond to showcase delicious, local, wholesome food,” said festival organizer Chris Hudyma. “Our intent is to foster a community that is passionate about real food. It’s a journey for people to rediscover that they can grow and cook their own food and that it can taste so much better than the processed food we so often eat in this country.”

Highlights of the festival include: educational presentations; cooking demonstrations; children’s story tent and book giveaways; hands-on kids’ cooking and kitchen skills station; and vendors consisting of local farms and businesses.

  • The Celebration of Food Festival promotes the following long-range goals:
  • Increase community health and wellness by promoting access and utilization of SLOW food.
  • Enhance our county’s ability to connect people and businesses that bring SLOW food to our tables.
  • Support farmers, farmers’ markets, businesses, non-profits and government in making Snohomish County a sustainable and economically viable place to live and work by providing Festival sponsors, vendors and presenters opportunities to promote their food-related endeavors.
  • Educate and raise community awareness of our rich agricultural heritage.
  • Promote and demonstrate benefits of sustainable agriculture, locally grown and naturally prepared food.
  • Further establish Snohomish County as a hub for regional food and foster tourism and economic vitality.

Oh, So Much Northwest Geek Delight This Weekend

Norwestcon Logo

Yeah, the Emerald City Comicon is done, but that’s not even close to all the geek delight the region has the offer. There are events throughout the year, and these two are (both) this weekend.

And there are still more. I’ve started a list of all the regions events, which I’ll keep updated as I learn more. Feel free to let me know of any that aren’t on here.

An additional note: I was just informed that the Bellingham Comicon is a go for October 24th. More details on their Facebook page and their website.

Emerald City Comicon Is Underway

Oh, dear geek friends, Emerald City Comicon fans, I know some folks felt slighted by this statement from Washington State’s DOT:

It’s easy to feel slighted when one has lived their lives as the butt of myriad jokes. Comicons are fantastic events, bringing together thousands of people who love comics, anime, science fiction and fantasy. They’re glorious and fun events. I’ve been to a couple cons here in Seattle, but it’s been a LONG time. Too long, I’m afraid. I do love these events. Besides simply being surrounded by like-minded people, there are all the amazing speakers, chances to meet writers and artists who’ve inspired you, and (my favorite) cosplay. Cosplay is fun to watch: such amazing displays of creativity and passion.
Sadly, I’ll miss this one myself. However, Cons are definitely on my list of events to add. Looking forward to getting back into this world. But it can be followed via Twitter:

So, let’s assume you’ve missed the Emerald City Comiccon and are now deep in regret. Fret not! There are other options, in Seattle and beyond. Here’s what’s coming up in Seattle. This is more than comicons, but includes other geek culture conferences.
April 2-5: Norwescon (Seatac)
April 3-5: Sakuracon
August 28-31: Pax Prime
Sept. 25-27: Stemposium
Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: Aki Con
This is hardly an all encompassing list. I’m working on that, but here’s a start. Looking the entire Pacific Northwest region. I’ll keep working on it, so make it a point to check back.

New Year’s Weekend

It was a pretty calm weekend. Didn’t even hit the gym much, but that wasn’t too bad. Was feeling worn out, so clearly needed rest.

Did make it to REI’s garage sale, scoring some great gear at killer prices. But not much, as the past month had been had a heap of extra expense. In particular, found a bike jacket that I’m tempted to wear everywhere. I have no qualm with uber-bike-nerd status.

Makes me look forward to riding in 2015. I plan on greatly increasing my mileage this year. I’ll map out a more specific goal soon. I also want to ride a few organized rides. I haven’t thought it through much deeper than that.  Now, just wondering if I’ll hit the Chilly Hilly next month.

Also looking forward to the year’sSeattle Bike Expo. Centurylink field should provide a nice, more easily accessible venue. Parking shall be a hoot, but us cyclists, especially the hardcore, will be fine. Plenty of bike racks, I’m sure.

There are a few other outside goals I’m entertaining. Getting some good hikes in really excites me. Ice Caves again, perhaps another trip up to Lake 22, but only looking at day hikes right now. These will be summer based. At least good weather focused.

So, 2015 week be an outside-centric year. How more awesome can you get! See you outside!
