Have you been to Mel & Mia’s in Edmonds? Best baked cakes and such in South Snohomish County!

My good friends at Mel & Mias in Edmonds (located at 7530 Olympic View Drive (Google Map Link), right in Perrinville) have great baked goods and coffee…really, really good coffee. Here’s their latest Instagram announcement, I expect it’ll be a fun time.

If you don’t know them, the owners are Bill and Rebecca. Bill is a Culinary Institute of America (the real CIA) trained chef with 30+ years of fine dining experience, and Rebecca has 20 years experience that combines with a passion of cakes, party planning and design. My family are regulars, and we rely on them for perfect cakes for those super-special occasions.

Besides heading down there as soon as you can, follow them on Facebook and Instagram. You’ll be glad you did.

The Fourth, Parades, Fireworks and the Law

fireworks

First, a reminder that for most of the region fireworks have been banished. Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Brier, Edmonds, Gold Bar, Marysville, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace and Woodway all have ordinances prohibiting them. For more details Snohomish County has created this guide for fireworks.

So, legal fireworks. You know, the professional shows! Well, there are many options around the region. The Washington State Patrol has this great list of options throughout the state. And, of course, there are parades and other events. I’ll highlight just few around here.

First, Mountlake Terrace has a fireworks show tonight, July 3, on Lake Ballinger

As for tomorrow, the actual Fourth, I’ll be in Edmonds, so I’ll start with their festivities. This is the main thing for South Snohomish County around Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace.

Here are some other local options:

Dinner got me thinking burgers

Our dinner plans this evening include going to Edmonds’ El Puerto. They’ve been a part of our lives for over a decade. And, now, the restaurant is at the end. The owners plan to retire after this weekend. We can hope it’s an April Fools prank, but I doubt it’ll do any good.

Anyway, the place was packed and we decided to head up the hill and half-block to another favorite eatery: Taki Tiki.

I had a BBQ Burger Dip; very yummy! My wife had the mahi mahi fish tacos and was quite happy. We’ve eaten there many times over the years, and tried many of their options. I’ve never been disappointed.

This got me thinking. I think it would be fun to explore different burger places in the region. In south Snohomish County, I’ve eaten at, besides Taki Tiki, Red Onion in Mountlake Terrace, Dick’s, Blazing Onion at Alderwood Mall, Hop Jack’s in Lynnwood (and up in Smokey Pointe), and Hamburger Harry’s (Edmonds). Heading north theres Bob’s Burgers and Brews, and also Ray’s in Everett, Marysville’s AJ’s, Burger Mill, Zeke’s in Gold Bat, Nutty’s Junkyard Grill in Arlington…these are what comes rolling out readily. I’m sure I’d think of others if I gave it time. This is just Snohomish County.

And I already have a bit of a list of places I want to try.

  • Country Burger by Lake Ki
  • Dave’s Burgers in Lynnwood
  • Charley’s in Snohomish

What’s your favorite that’s missing from this list? Tell me which of the above you love, or dislike. I am open to all kinds of ideas. I’d really love to hear your favorites.

It’s the Weekend! Time to see Captain Marvel!

I wanted to go last weekend, but events conspired against me. Now’s a whole new opportunity, and I expect to make it work.

Now, my main question: do I go to Alderwood AMC, with all its Dolby glory, or head to the Edmonds theater, my favorite?

What do you think?

Memories of my Grandfather

Riding the ferry

From shore to shore for hours

Talking to strangers

I’ve been thinking a lot of my grandfather lately. He spent years driving trucks throughout the region. His gift for connecting with people his deep. He had friends all over Edmonds. I emulate him… in my own way.

Edmonds Named First Creative District – 425 Magazine

I love how Edmonds has engaged the local arts community over the years. This betters the quality of life for the area, which brings people into the City. We have a unique blend of artisan businesses in the urban core. And, actually, throughout the city.

So, congrats to all the businesses, government staff, and artists that help make all this possible.

LPD Safety Message

Don’t Be a Holiday Crime Target

LYNNWOOD, WA (November 19, 2018) – The busy holiday season is here. When you are shopping for those precious gifts, take the following precautions to protect yourself from becoming a victim:

Shopping from home:

Do not have items shipped to your home if no one will be there to receive them. Packages are too easily stolen from front porches.

Vehicle Prowl Prevention:

Vehicle prowls are the theft of property from a motor vehicle. Most are crimes of opportunity such as through unlocked doors and open windows. Also, vehicles can sustain expensive damage – especially to their windows, doors and locks when there is forcible entry.

Large parking locations, such as shopping centers, are prime targets for a prowler since multiple vehicles can be hit in a short time span. To avoid being a car prowl target:

Remember the 3 S’s:

Scan: Scan the contents of your vehicle. Are there items visible that would be of interest to a criminal?

Stow: Discreetly stow everything out of sight; you don’t want someone to SEE YOU placing something in your trunk. Do NOT use a blanket or coat to cover valuables, this piques the interest of a prowler.

Secure: Close windows and lock your vehicle.

  • Use a garage, secure location, or Valet service whenever possible.
  • Park in well-lit areas where your car can be seen.
  • Avoid isolated areas. Park near locations frequently used by pedestrians.
  • Secure the trunk, hatches, bed-mounted tool boxes, and canopies.
  • If you have a removable car stereo, remove it.
  • Install anti-theft devices.
  • Don’t leave packages, bags of any kind visible on the seats or floor of your car.
  • If you take packages to your car trunk and want to go back to the mall, move your car or take your items home!
  • If you hear something suspicious (shattering glass) or see someone looking into vehicles, call 911.

Parking lot/ Personal Safety:

  • Consider using the mall’s Valet parking service if it offers one.
  • Make a note of your parking spot so that you don’t have to wander around the parking lot after shopping.
  • Have your keys in your hand before leaving the mall and walk purposely to your car.
  • Make sure nobody is in the car before entering, and lock the doors immediately when you get inside.
  • If you are leaving a mall alone at night, you may request a security escort to your car.
  • At an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), choose one that is located inside a mall, grocery store, or well-lighted location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need. Shield the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you so they cannot view your transaction or obtain your PIN. Do not throw your ATM receipt away.
  • Don’t display large sums of cash in public. Be discreet about money or other valuables you are carrying.
  • Be alert in public restrooms. If anything seems amiss or if a group of people is loitering in the area, leave quickly and find another facility.
  • Stay alert in crowds to protect your valuables. A thief can use the cover of the crowd to make a quick getaway after stealing your wallet or shopping bag.
  • Take only the credit cards you NEED for shopping, leave the rest at home.
  • Women, carry your purses close to your body and separate your cash from your credit cards.
  • Men, consider carrying your wallet in a front pocket and/or adding a large rubber band around it so if a thief tries to swipe it, it will get caught on the pocket.
  • Don’t keep your keys in your purse. If your purse is stolen, then the thief will have your address and keys to your home. Keep your keys in your pocket without an ID.

Special Winter Weather Warning:

  • During the winter months, many people warm up their cars in the morning and then leave them unattended. Don’t do this! Not only is it against the law, but a running car is also an invitation to a car thief.

Some South County Holiday Events Coming Up Within The Next Week

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, we can consider the holidays fully upon us. Warm 106.9 is fully on Christmas Music mode (24/7 through Christmas Day). Edmonds lead the way last weekend with their Tree Lighting. However, we’re far from done with the holiday fun. Here’s what’s coming up in the next few days.

Christmas Has Officially Started In Edmonds

Earlier I posted this: “Christmas Starts In Edmonds This Evening“. Below are a few photos from the tree lighting. Sadly, I took far more shots, but my camera’s night settings weren’t working well and most of them turned out blurry. I might need to upgrade my old Olympus PEN.

Anyway, head over to the Facebook page and give these one’s a like, if you’d be so good.
