Found a Must-See Film: Kubo and the Two Strings

A few days ago I stumbled upon this trailer: Kubo and the Two Strings. A stop-motion animated films of epic proportions. Yes, I know that’s a cliche, but I find it far too fitting to not use it.

Anyway, I’m deeply disappointed in myself for not noticing this film before. The trailers, by themselves, are truly beautiful. It has a stellar cast (Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, George Takei, amongst the most luminary), and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s clearly a film that needs to be seen. Just got to figure out where or how that will work out as I doubt it’s in the theaters any more (was released last year). But Kubo is on Netflix!

So, enjoy the preview below. Let me know what you think. Especially if you’ve seen it (no spoilers, por favor).

Cinerama’s Anime Festival

I’m pretty excited that the good folks at Cinerama are hosting their first Anime Movie Festival. They’ll be featuring twenty-three genre favorites including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Paprika and Cowboy Bebop.

If you like Studio Ghibli, they’ll be heavily featured including ten masterpieces from famed anime grand master Hayao Miyazaki. These titles include Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

Also included in the festival is 2017 Oscar-nominated The Red Turtle.

All movies will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles (the choice for discerning anime geeks). One exception: Ponyo, which will be dubbed in English, and The Red Turtle, which is dialogue free.

It’s hard for me to choose one, and the time/commute to Seattle factor makes things painful. Dream world: I’d take next week off, stay in a nearby hotel and binge. However, that’s not to me.

Which is your favorite? Are you going? Which films are you going to see?

Anyway, all the details are here, with the schedule and reservations here.

Everett Community College hosts FREE Japanese Anime Arts Festival May 29-30

Perhaps, like myself, you’d never considered Everett as a bastion of geek culture. But you’d be wrong! We might not match Seattle yet, but we’re moving in the right direction. First, we have Orcacon next January. And this weekend , Everett Community College will be hosting a Anime Arts Festival (a more detailed schedule is available here).  Looks like a fun event, especially if you’re a fan of anime. And, if you’ve either been on the fence or are just curious about this stuff, what a great chance to check out this part of Japanese culture (free…FREE!!).

I hope to make my way there. Will I see you? Let me know if the comments.
