Project Information

Starting April 2018, the City of Lynnwood will be doing paving work to preserve streets throughout the city.  Chip sealing is a key part of the City’s preservation program to maximize the life of our roads. It is used in cities and counties across the country as a cost-effective method of pavement preservation. New technology and better mix designs have improved chip sealing products, minimizing its impacts and maximizing its effectiveness. The treatment extends the life of each road by seven to ten years and provides a new sealed surface, at a fraction of the cost of an asphalt overlay.

Celebrate the New Year, Edmonds Style

I was asked earlier today for a list of “what’s going on” New Year’s Eve in Edmonds. I hadn’t put much thought as I’m planning on spending the evening with friends (I’ll be in the Edmonds Bowl, just so you know), but thought I’d dig through my memories and the web and pull together a quick list.

First, I want to point out that Kathy Passage over at My Edmonds News has list of holiday events and such in her most recent article. She’s pretty cool: go check her out!

Anyway, I’ve pulled out a list of specifically New Year’s Eve stuff, focusing on the “ringing in 2018” (aka: out after midnight) stuff.

Oh, and there’s New Year’s Day:
Polar Plunge! https://www.facebook.com/events/154410931849531/. This event is a long-standing tradition in our community. It took some work, but we managed to keep the event for disappearing. If you’re a fan of freezing your butt off, come join the party! I doubt that you’ll lose any butt-mass, so it’s not a recommended way to start your weight-loss resolution, but, whatever.

Flowers of December

These lovely blossoms greeted my morning. Such a delight in this season of dark, cold rain. Always glimmers of beauty, of hope in the darkest of times.

Early autumn: my favorite season. December, though, with its gloomy disposition and scarce sunlight, sits at the bottom of my list. But joys still exist. This season of candles, hot cocoa, Christmas music and presents delights me deeply. Within all that, I find solace and hope for the coming spring.

Realizing my influence

I had a powerful realization today. While training some junior belts, I noticed one, a high-school aged young woman, was watching me closely. Everything I said and did was watched closely.  I saw how much potential I had to build her up, or tear her down.

It’s sobering and humbling. Knowing how nuch influence I have. I love the idea that a few well placed positives: words, smiles, can add so much to her life. And screwing this up can really mess things up.

Long ago, I pledged to be powerfully positive. Seeking, still, to master that. But I’m moving forward.

Some thoughts on pho

Over the past several days, I’ve had pho at least twice. Now, there aren’t as many pho places around here, yet, as there are teriyaki. But they’re making inroads. I can name 5 restaurants within a very short distance, and with great ease. Teriyaki, which should be the official foods of Seattle. It was a running joke, for awhile, that there was a stip mall, somewhere in Seattle, that didn’t have a teriyaki shop. Somewhere… So, as a comparison, I can think of 13 teriyaki shops in the same geographic area. 
For me, these foods, Vietnamese soup and Japanese chicken, were my comfort foods. When I’m sick, nothing nagging me feel better than pho ga, or chicken soup. With a fan of Siracha, and a dollop of hoison. Perfect! And if I’m stressed, or feeling sad, mad or bad, teriyaki picks up my mood. 

Now, there are variations. For teriyaki, I like it crisp, charred, solidly grilled. Others I know, prefer it cooked more gently. With pho, there’s pressed chicken vs shredded, with my preference being shredded. 

A few of the foods that make the Puget Sound basin a unique place culturally. So, Bon Appetite!

No Lions, No Tigers, But Bears, Oh My!

Well, we’ve had, yet again, some bears make their way through my fair suburban city. Two bears, a momma and cub were spotted over by Lowe’s off of 196th. I heard about it from a friend who got to see them, before they scurried off (the police are still trying to locate them).

So, you probably noticed the phrase “yet again”. This isn’t the first round with bears in my rather non-rural own. The next most recent episode was back in 2011, where we had a bear running through yards by our local elementary school. That one didn’t end so well for the bear, sadly.

I also remember a bear being captured down in Edmonds back in 2006.  Also, there’s this one from 2009 and in Shoreline.

Anyway, hope the bears can be captured and returned to a wilder place, safer for both us and them.

Now it’s Safeway, or Everything Changes

A few weeks ago, one of my local grocery stores rebranded.  After Safeway and Albertsons merged a few years back, the writing was on the proverbial wall. The Safeway branded store across the street was shuttered. A few months back, I noticed the start of a remodel. While talking with friends there, I was told the store would become a Safeway soon. That’s now done. 

A few days ago I noticed I felt somewhat sad looking at the sign. Well, the store has been an Albertsons as long as I can remember. Went there with my mom, watched the changes of the area, yet it was there. No longer, though. 

Lynnwood, this little suburb north of Seattle, hasn’t been as radically transforming as Seattle or the Eastside. Well, until recently. Stalwarts of my childhood have closed, buildings getting torn down, land redeveloped, vacant lots becoming neighborhoods. Housing prices sprinting upwards. 

Change. Pretty rapid change, too. 

Communities consist of these institutions, and their interactions with our citizens. The uniqueness of Lynnwood morphs, so what will become of the charms we value? I value?. 

Defining their value, though, is hard. I see the value to government, and our local business community. I’m a real estate agent and currently work in construction. I get that. Yet I worry that the influx of national chains and steep housing price inflation erode that which makes this community unique. Lynnwood has always been about commerce. But it’s also had a place for very one-of-a-kind businesses. Those are the ones vanishing. 

So many long-time residents I know feel concerned. Those things that build attachment vanish. What holds us here? At what place do we surrender to inflation and move to someplace more affordable? I guess that’s the question at the end of all this. 

I don’t know, my friends. Just don’t know. 

Summer Is Coming for Edmonds Own Steel Magic Northwest

This evening was Steel Magic Northwest’s “Here Comes Summer” concert, held at Edmonds Seventh Day Adventist church.  I’ve written about them before, after I saw their holiday concert. This steel drum ensemble is just amazing! Tonight’s concert was simply brilliant. An amazing amount of sound comes through these guys, and clear, crisp, wonderful sound! As a musician, I’m delighted after each performance. Gary Gibson, the director, excels at leading this group.

Steel Magic performs a wide array of styles, and very challenging repertoire with complex music. Check out their schedule and make it a point to lend them your lobes, my chums! You won’t be disappointed!

With that, they have some ambitious summer plans. In order to pull that off, and provide opportunities to both play, and to be heard, they need our help.

Check out their Kickstarter campaign. With a rather humble goal of $3,000, they can reach an amazing number of children, youth and adults. I can rattle off the details, but I’d rather let them do it (see the video below). And, of course, please help them out any way you can. If you can’t donate yourself, please share the campaign with your friends.
