Rick Steves Visits Whatcom County

white and brown mountain under blue sky

Edmonds’ own Rick Steves recently created a series about touring Whatcom County for the good folks at Visit Bellingham and Whatcom County (check out their write up of this series here). I found it fascinating and enlightening.

Below are the videos in episode order.

Episode 1: Rick Steves Tours Whatcom County and Samples Farm to Bottle Fare

Episode 2: Rick Steves Explores Seaside Life and Peace Arch State Park at the Top of the PNW in Whatcom County

Episode 3: Rick Steves Enjoys Arts & Culture in Whatcom County

I adore Fairhaven. It’s a wonderful part of the region that has a marvelous charm. I especially appreciate Rick calling out Rena Priest, Washington State’s Poet Laureate and member of the Lumi Nation.

If this inspires to you to explore Whatcom, the Visit Bellingham & Whatcom County folks have a visitors guide for you.

*A special thanks to The Poetry Department . . . aka The Boynton Blog. It’s where I first read about Rick’s video series. If you love poetry, you should go check them out.

Closure on I-5 ramps and highway for Lynnwood Link construction planned for June 26

Some important intel about area traffic. Here’s the TLDR:

Crews working on the Lynnwood Link Extension will be closing the southbound lanes of I-5 South from 220th Street SW to SR 104 in Mountlake Terrace overnight on Saturday, June 26 for construction that will allow the light rail alignment to cross over the highway. Northbound traffic lanes will remain open.

Where is Admiralty Inlet?

When I was checking the weather earlier I noticed the wind advisory.

When you clicked on the link, it stated that we were watching for high-winds through Admiralty Inlet. I didn’t think much of it, but as the day progressed wondered how many people knew where that is. Well, let’s have a look shall we?

Admiralty Inlet

Named by George Vancouver after his bosses, the Board of Admiralty, Admiralty Inlet stretches from Edmonds to the south up to Picnic Point, then west across the Sound to Port Gamble, continuing west along the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas to Pt. Wilson (Port Townsend), and bounded on the north by Whidbey Island. And important nautical thoroughfare for the region as all ships heading from the ocean to Seattle or Tacoma need to pass through.

As a boy, one of my best friends and I thought kayaking this would be good. His father was in the Coast Guard and put the kibosh on that hard. We were NOT going to be allowed to be one of his rescues! I still think it would be fun to have a motor yacht and sail up to Port Townsend. However, my propensity towards seasickness will probably always make that a bad idea, especially since I’ve seen many storms whip through, buffeting the shores of Edmonds. For a protected body of water, the waves can get rather fierce.

A rather important piece of northwest geography in my own little neighborhood.

The Edmonds Chamber is having a terrible year, and is looking for our help

The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is having a terrible year, which pretty much all of their fundraisers cancelled due to Covid 19. And now, predictably, their highly valued Taste of Edmonds needs to be cancelled (King 5 has a good article about this). This puts a huge challenge on the Chamber, which is now struggling to survive this virus.

They haven’t given up, though. Capturing the long-stranding “Edmonds Kind Of Day” catchphrase, they’ve launched “Be An Edmonds Kind Of Hero“, to raise their operating funds. They have a goal of $100,000, and are already almost half-way there (as of August 8)! I believe in supporting them as they put on so many events that I value. The Edmonds Kind Of Fourth, the Christmas Tree Lighting, The Arts Festival…we usually go to every one of their events!

Now it’s time to step up and help. “I just donated to make sure our favorite Edmonds events return in 2021. You should, too! Click here to show your support.”

If you can help, please give what you can.

Getting Takeout: helping our beloved local restaurants stay afloat

Today we went and got take-out from one of our favorite local places: Mel and Mia’s (they’re offering takeout and curbside pickup). In the madness of these times, it’s critical to support our local businesses. Especially those that you adore.

Check out the macaroon Rebecca crafted! Isn’t it stunning? One of many reasons why I love these folks.
