Gwinwood is a really wonderful camp down in Lacey. Definitely had fun with my camera there.

So, I’m Not A Fan Of The Bite Of Seattle, The Taste Of Edmonds, And Such
Ok, so I’m a killjoy: I’m not a fan of the Bite of Seattle nor the Taste Of Edmonds. So, I don’t truly hate them. They do create a nuisance to the neighbors, and add to the traffic misery that’s the Seattle region. But that’s really not the root of things.
I remember back in the stone age (so it seems) when the Bite was held at Greenlake. Much smaller, though traffic was still a pain. A key thing I remember (mis-remember?) was smaller portions. The purpose was to go and sample the wares from many different restaurants. Perhaps it was just the bottomless appetite of a teenaged cyclist (who would ride to the lake…a couple of times all the way from Lynnwood). But that’s my recollection. And, you know, if my memory is wrong, so be it. I still think that’s what the event should be about. Not a chance to drop $5 to then go and buy lunch from a vendor. I guess I’m greedy…I want to try everything Edmonds has to offer!
Now, let’s be clear, I’m sure I’ll be making my way down to the Taste of Edmonds this weekend. My friends with Steel Magic Northwest will be performing Saturday at 1:00 pm. Oh, and if you’re a fan of the Saturday Farmer’s Market, they’ll be on sabbatical this weekend.
A new band to me: Fell From A Star
My friend Anna, over at Anna’s Transformation mentioned a band, Fell From A Star in her recent post. I listened to their song Made of Diamonds, which I think is pretty good. Love the vocals along with the harmonic blend. If you have Spotify, you can stream their album Made of Diamonds, which I’m doing now. They’re also on Google Music, if that’s your jam. I expect they’re on Apple music as well, but I’ll let you search them there. :)
Give them a listen today. If you like them, they’ll be playing tomorrow out in Woodinville. The price is quite fair.
Anyway, definitely check them out.
Changes with the Muppets
The Washington Post is reporting that long-time voice of Kermit (and other Muppets), Steve Whitmire is stepping down and a new voice, that of Matt Vogel, moves to the fore. Well, nothing is more consistent than change. I expect Kermit will retain his cultural cornerstone place for years to come.
My beloved Muppets have been garnering my attention lately. Not the least of which is due to the exhibition at MoPoP. Which I still haven’t seen, but am going to rectify that shortly.
Though I’m hardly a true Muppet Master, I was surprised by couple of facts in the article I didn’t know.
- The Muppets are now owned by Disney. Not too surprising, but I’d missed that Disney acquired them. Don’t know if this changes anything…
- How’d I miss the “Muppet Thought Of The Week” on YouTube? That bugs me. Here’s the link. You’re welcome.
Related side note: Check out ToughPig, a Muppet fan site. Worth your time.
Lastly, here’s the most recent Muppet Thought Of The Week. Enjoy!
Summer Is Coming for Edmonds Own Steel Magic Northwest
This evening was Steel Magic Northwest’s “Here Comes Summer” concert, held at Edmonds Seventh Day Adventist church. I’ve written about them before, after I saw their holiday concert. This steel drum ensemble is just amazing! Tonight’s concert was simply brilliant. An amazing amount of sound comes through these guys, and clear, crisp, wonderful sound! As a musician, I’m delighted after each performance. Gary Gibson, the director, excels at leading this group.
Steel Magic performs a wide array of styles, and very challenging repertoire with complex music. Check out their schedule and make it a point to lend them your lobes, my chums! You won’t be disappointed!
With that, they have some ambitious summer plans. In order to pull that off, and provide opportunities to both play, and to be heard, they need our help.
Check out their Kickstarter campaign. With a rather humble goal of $3,000, they can reach an amazing number of children, youth and adults. I can rattle off the details, but I’d rather let them do it (see the video below). And, of course, please help them out any way you can. If you can’t donate yourself, please share the campaign with your friends.
Memorial Day Weekend + Great Weather = Traffic
This morning I heard a brief blurb about this weekend’s traffic. It’s going to be lovely, and there are some great events like Folklife going on (besides Folklife, my favorite so far is Tankfest in Everett at Paine Field.
Everyone will be on the roads!
Expect horrible traffic throughout the Puget Sound region, and plan extra time to get to whatever adventure you’ll be taking.
Looking for something to do (besides one the two above)? Here’s a few lists of events and activities out there.
- City of Everett’s Events Calendar
- The Everett Herald’s Events Calendar
- The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau’s Events Calendar
- Lynnwood Tourism’s Events Page
- Edmonds Events Calendar
Just a small sampling of all that’s going on around here. There’s also all the mountains, beaches, parks…outside stuff!
No reason to be on the couch this upcoming long weekend!
May is Muppets Month in Seattle!
- First off, on May 13th, the Seattle Public Library will host Jim Henson Con at the Central Library. Running from 10 am to 5 pm, this all ages event will have such activities as crafts, costumes, and, my favorite, a Labyrinth Sing-Along!
- Then starting on May 20, MoPOP will be hosting The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited. Growing up under the influence of muppets, this exhibit thrills me.

So, here’s a solution: the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday, April 29th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
In south Snohomish County, we can head to Mountlake Terrace’s police department located at 5906 232nd St SW, Mountlake Terrace.
If you don’t live close to Terrace, this link will help you find a closer participating location.
